Construction and safety solutions emerge winners in Southeast Asia’s first proptech hackathon

Top prize sponsored by JLL went to spatial mapping start-up Vektor while the JLL Innovative Proptech Award was awarded to a drone security team

SINGAPORE, 7 August 2017 – Two proptech start-ups walked away with cash prizes for the real estate technology solutions they presented yesterday at Southeast Asia's first proptech hackathon, Hood Disrupt.

Held from 4 to 6 August, the event was organised by igloohome, a Singapore-based start-up, and co-working space District 6. It saw 17 teams presenting a wide range of tech innovations and business ideas for the real estate industry.

Team Vektor, which designed a robot for real time spatial mapping of construction sites, scooped the grand prize of S$5,000 sponsored by JLL. In addition, the JLL Innovative Proptech Award of S$1,000 was given to Airsquire, a start-up that has developed sensor drones to detect safety and security issues such as fires.

"What really stood out for me for these two winners was how they developed the entire suite of technologies in their solutions to tackle key issues facing the industry," said Anuj Nangpal, Head of JLL Real Estate Technology Ventures (India) and one of the six judges at the hackathon.

"The quantity and quality of ideas seen at Hood Disrupt is indicative of the fast growing proptech scene in the region. JLL is always supportive of new innovations and solutions that will propel our industry forward and better serve our clients' needs. A hackathon like this one is the perfect example of how big corporates and start-ups can work together to ensure that the real estate industry is fit for the future," added Mr Nangpal.

Winning team Vektor, made up of Aravind Kandiah, Koh Kai Wei, and Vivek Kalyan from the Singapore University of Technology and Design are inspired by their win to bring their solution to the market. "The construction industry is a very traditional one, and hasn't caught on completely with the times as well as the new technologies available," said Kandiah. "We hope to address this pain point with our robot, and boost productivity to help the real estate industry build buildings faster and better."

Airquire's Kyle Tan and You Yue hope to undertake more use cases for their drones and are in talks with vineyard owners and palm oil plantation owners for possible trials.

Judging panel

Besides Mr Nangpal, the other five judges were Ervin Lim, Head of C31 Ventures & Corporate Development; Ivan Ng, Chief Technology Officer of City Developments Limited; Steffen Schacher, Director of Applied Innovation Exchange; Priscilla Han, Head of Venture Investments, REAPRA; and Anthony Chow, CEO of igloohome.

The teams were judged on the following criteria: innovation, opportunity in terms of market size, defensibility against new competitors, implementation, team work and presentation.

Two other prizes were given out: Surreal, a team that built a plug-in allowing homeowners to visualise their floor plans in 3D, won the District 6 Honourary Choice Award; and Trabble received the Global Choice Award for its chatbot with machine learning for the hospitality industry.
